how to draw 3d buildings in autocad

Topics covered in this Lesson:

Create a 3D Model of a Building

If you take completed the previous lessons in this level, you now have the tools to create a large diversity of objects in 3D. This lesson is designed to show how to create simple building in 3D from start to finish. The aforementioned process can be used to build more than circuitous buildings too. Start past creating this building and and so effort drawing your domicile.

This method follows my usual approach of "modeling it like yous would build information technology". I'll showtime with a floor programme, then build the walls, make openings for the doors and windows, add doors and windows, then put a roof on information technology. Information technology merely seems similar the nearly logical approach to me.

Beneath is an epitome of the last edifice that is drawn in this lesson (with rendering and lighting explained in the adjacent lesson).

Building Project

Start past setting your units to architectural (DDUNITS). I apologize to anybody in advance that uses the metric system, only most of the viewers and revenue come up from the USA, which still refuses to larn the metric organisation. These techniques will work with whatsoever flooring plan, so if yous have one with metric measurements, feel free to use it.

Think to create new layers for each type of objects you volition draw (windows, doors, walls, roof, etc).

At present draw the bases of the walls using the dimensions are shown below. You don't need to dimension information technology. Optionally, you can apply the (new in AutoCAD 2007) POLYSOLID command.

floorplan

Now you lot will create regions out of all your wall lines.

Control: REG REGION
Select objects: <SELECT ALL THE LINES> Specify reverse corner: vii found

Select objects: <ENTER>
three loops extracted.
iii Regions created.

You should now accept three regions. If you don't then it unremarkably means the your lines don't meet.

Next you are going to EXTRUDE the walls ix' high.

Command: EXT EXTRUDE
Current wire frame density: ISOLINES=4
Select objects: <SELECT THE 3 REGIONS> Specify reverse corner: three establish
Select objects: <ENTER>
Specify height of extrusion or [Path]: nine'
Specify angle of taper for extrusion <0>: <ENTER>

It should appear that nada has happened. You will need to go to the SW Isometric view to see how the wall were extruded. Do this and and so apply the Hibernate Command. Something doesn't wait right. What you will need to do is Subtract the 2 smaller regions from the larger region. You should see this outcome after the Subtract and Hide commands.

After Hide

Now it'due south starting to wait like something. Your walls are almost complete.

Side by side y'all will add together a door or two. The first door, on the outside will be on the bottom left wall. Start past drawing a rectangle from the middle of the outside wall and the other corner @half-dozen,36 - this will create the opening. Your rectangle should expect similar this:

door opening

Now y'all want to EXTRUDE the rectangle upward six'8" and SUBTRACT it from the wall.

Create a door layer (or make it active if you already have one) and draw a rectangle in the door opening that is three"x 3' - put it in the center of the door opening. Extrude information technology half dozen'8".

Now create a 2d door (and opening) on the inside wall parallel to the outside wall that is 32" wide. Later you do that, the drawing should expect like this from the SW Isometric view:

with 2 doors

If you haven't saved your drawing yet, at present would be a good time.

At present you're going to add some windows. This will be done using a similar process equally the door. You will create openings, then add the window.

Create ii rectangles in the position shown below.

window openings

EXTRUDE the window 36 inches. Them move them upwards three'8" in the Z axis. Recollect your relative coordinates from Lesson 1-ane?

Command: One thousand
Motility
Select objects: 1 found
Select objects: one found, two total
Select objects: Specify base point or displacement: <PICK ANYWHERE ON SCREEN>
Specify 2d point of
displacement or <use first indicate as displacement>: @0,0,3'viii

Now mirror the bottom left box to the opposite wall (Note: It will exist easier if you lot revert to the peak view for the mirror control)and the upper box to the inside wall then you have the 4 boxes looking like this :

window openings

Next, decrease the iv window openings from the walls. Later on switching to SW Isometric view and using the hibernate command, your cartoon should look like this:

windows

Now the window panes have to get in. Since this is a elementary drawing, you just exist putting in a plane of drinking glass to represent the window.

Create a new layer for windows. The easiest way to do this is merely like you created the doors. Make the window one" deep. In one case again, start with the rectangle at the base of operations of the window opening, extrude it the summit of the window opening and motion it into the centre.

Once you have 1 window made, copy information technology to the other openings. Relieve your drawing and then type in SHADE and choose the K option. Your building should look similar this:

shaded image

Wow - now yous're getting in that location. Next you volition add to the walls to make them the right pitch for the roof.

Beginning y'all will have to change your UCS. Kickoff he UCS command and choose the 3Point selection past typing 3 <ENTER>. When prompted (watch the control line) select the points shown beneath:

UCS Points

After you selection the 3rd signal, the cursor should plow on its side. Now you can draw on the side of the edifice. In this case, you will be drawing a triangular shape to correspond the rest of the wall up to the roof.

Describe a LINE from the middle of the top outside of the wall upward 6'. Then draw a POLYLINE from one corner, to the next, to the top of the line and apply the C pick to close the polyline.

Finally EXTRUDE the triangle -six" and so Re-create the extruded object to the other side of the building. Erase the vertical line you drew. You should take something like this at present:

Wall Section

To stop the wall, perform a UNION (Lesson 3-11) between the triangular sections and the bottom wall.

You're nigh washed now. You volition need to draw the roof to complete the drawing.

First y'all will need to change your UCS to align it with the camber of the roof. Use the points shown below - and be conscientious which endpoints you select.

Roof UCS

Now draw a RECTANGLE from the superlative left corner of the triangular shape to the bottom of the opposite corner of the other triangular shape. Information technology should similar the magenta rectangle below:

roof line

New EXTRUDE the rectangle 6". Then copy 12" down in the Y Axis and then re-create it 12" up in the Y Axis - when you accept the three sections Union them into one object.

Change back to the WCS (UCS <ENTER><ENTER> ) and mirror the roof object to the other side. Check that it looks right by viewing the model from the left and from the front.

multi-view

The last matter to do is trim the excess pieces off the top of the roof where the ii slabs intersect. This volition be done using the Piece command (Lesson three-11).

Go to the SW Isometric view.

Outset the SLICE command and select the roof section towards the back. And so when you are asked to pick three points on the slicing aeroplane, select any three points on the top of the roof department at the front.

Switch to the NW Isometric view and slice other roof department in the same manner. Check to see that your roof looks correct, and if it is, wedlock the two roof objects now.

Get to the WCS and copy the roof 12" in the Positive X Centrality and 12 " in the Negative X Axis so union all iii roof objects. Your building should now expect like the ane beneath:

Final Building

Your building is complete. To add together a lawn , draw a very large rectangle effectually the house at the aforementioned Z level as the lesser of the business firm. Then turn it into a region and so that materials can be added subsequently.

Save the drawing, and then if you like, add materials and render the final image. In the image at the height of the lesson, the door is detailed fabric. More detailed instructions for rendering volition be plant in Lesson 3-17.

Hither are the materials used for the rendering at the tiptop of the page. Yous tin download them and add them to your Textures folder. The door texture would exist used like the terminate sign yous may have rendered in lesson iii-14.

door.jpg | grey_roof_slate.jpg | grass.jpg | stucco_white.jpg

Y'all can also endeavour to add more detail to the building if you similar. Only now you can see that using a few commands (in this case most 12), you lot can draw decent looking models.

Extra Practice: Build a 3D model of the Cabin Drawing from Lesson 2-1. How much item can you add? Door knobs? Window panes?
