Yep, Ottawa, it's a polar vortex again

Yous tin can now officially blame a polar vortex for Ottawa'due south frigid temperatures.

But look, what'southward a polar vortex?

Most of Canada has a coating of cold air that has pushed its way down from the Arctic, where it spends much of the year going around in circles (that'due south the "vortex" part) and not bothering united states at all.

This air moved southward over Christmas. We used to call this a cold spell, generally. The polar vortex term defenseless on in 2022 when an especially persistent mass of Arctic air hung over the centre of the continent from early January into April.

Now it has happened again, simply this time the cold forecast only covers the next week or so.

The Conditions Network too offers a video showing the southward shift of cold air.

Here's the U.S. National Weather condition Service on the topic. (The capital messages are theirs):

"The polar vortex is a large area of low force per unit area and common cold air surrounding both of the World's poles. Information technology Ever exists about the poles, but weakens in summertime and strengthens in winter. The term 'vortex' refers to the counter-clockwise flow of air that helps keep the colder air nearly the Poles. Many times during winter in the northern hemisphere, the polar vortex volition expand, sending common cold air southward with the jet stream.

"This occurs adequately regularly during wintertime and is often associated with large outbreaks of Arctic air in the The states. The one that occurred January 2022 is similar to many other common cold outbreaks that have occurred in the past, including several notable colder outbreaks in 1977, 1982, 1985 and 1989.

"There are several things the polar vortex is Non. Polar vortexes are not something new. The term 'polar vortex' has just recently been popularized, bringing attention to a weather feature that has always been present. It is also not a feature that exists at the World's surface. Weather forecasters examine the polar vortex past looking at conditions tens of thousands of feet upwards in the atmosphere; still, when nosotros feel extremely cold air from the Chill regions at Earth's surface, it is sometimes associated with the polar vortex."
